One of my favorite summertime activities is definitely swimming, or being near a pool. While I don’t get to go as often as I like (Mark refuses to swim in pools and most of my friends aren’t feeling the poolside vibes), I have no problem going alone, with my favorite book and playlist in tow (I always seem to forget a towel, though). But if there isn’t a pool (or ocean) in your area, don’t worry — there’s a moodboard for that. Continue reading

‘The Golden Girls’ Remind Us Why Our Moms Rock So Hard
In honor of Mother’s Day, I’ll be sharing my favorite motherly moments with Dorothy, Rose, Blanche and Sophia! Sure, mothers can provide some harsh (unsolicited!) advice at times, and they may say (hilarious) things that embarrass you to death, but they’re also pretty great. Continue reading

Do Beauty Pageant Contestants Look The Same Because Of Surgery?
It isn’t uncommon for a lot of beauty pageant contestants to look the same. After all, all of them are trying to conform to the same set of rules or norms that the majority of people in our culture consider to be ‘beautiful.’ Skinny, tanned, big boobs, flawless skin, thick shiny and volumized hair. Those are North America’s typical standards. And sure in your garden-variety Miss USA pageant there’s a few brunettes, a redhead, a whole seaboard worth of blondes and a few girls to represent racial minorities, but a lot of them tend to blend together.
However, when it comes to beauty pageants in other countries it seems that media outlets, like Buzzfeed, are boiling down similar physical attributes to plastic surgery. Noting that South Korea is home to the highest rate of plastic surgery per capita anywhere in the world, Buzzfeed lines up 20 South Korean beauty pageant contestants to note that they all look the same. Artistic Mom Draws Pop Culture-Inspired Pictures On Napkins For Her Kids
These napkins are too beautiful to use! When artist and mom Nina Levy packs lunch for her sons (one is six-years-old and the other is 10-years-old), she includes food as well as imaginative napkin drawings. As Levy has been drawing on napkins since 2007, she has thousands in storage. Levy posts her napkin drawings on her blog entitled Daily Napkins (which she started in 2011) where she includes a brief description of what inspired her to create each illustration. Continue reading

‘The Wall Street Journal’ Says Denying Men Sex Is Like Child Neglect
I think the title says it all. The Wall Street Journal’s latest “Bonds” column talks about a Mormon newlywed couple whose marriage saw drastic improvement upon the husband, Mr. Mower, “[teaching] his wife that not having sex with him amounts to cruel and unusual punishment.” This draught of sex, by the way, was spurred by Ms. Mower being turned off by the “pressure” to have sex following a miscarriage. The article cites the Mowers’ story as well as the Journal‘s host of scientists and therapists on all of “the terrible things that happen to a man denied sex,” essentially likening a wife who won’t put out for her husband to a mother neglecting her child. For a list of some of the “terrible things” that can happen if you don’t have sex with your husband Continue reading

Desperate Attempts To ‘Save One Show’ Don’t Look Bright
As a self-confessed television addict, I anticipate every coming fall season not just for the storylines or the characters. Not even for the happy return of my favourites from agonizing cliffhangers and the excitement to dig through a bunch of new series. It’s partially for the politics and the drama that goes on behind the televisions on the networks and cables that host them. Among my list of beauty and fashion blogs I check every day, I also check out TV By the Numbers an obsessive amount. I’m always up on the ratings, the Bubble Watch list and the Renew/Cancel Index. Partially because I want to see how well my shows are doing and their future prospects for renewal but also because it’s always fun to play a guessing game of which shows are going to get mauled by the Cancellation Bear — the official mascot for series’ with ratings so low they are bound to get cancelled any day.
But every year, around when sweeps hit in March-April, studio execs get together to start deciding who’s going to get renewed and who won’t live to see another plot twist. That’s where E!Online comes in with an annual poll to help save a show with plummeting ratings but an avid fanbase that wants to keep watching. Or also read: E!Online came up with a genius way to direct massive amounts of traffic to their servers by luring in desperate fans of a dying show to try and ‘save’ it with an online poll.
